1. Don’t find a Job — Find a Vocation

To take a leaf from Alan Watts’ book, start by asking yourself this question; What would I like to do if money was no object? In other words, how would you really enjoy spending your life? Think and meditate on it for a period of time, herein lies your answer.

Because whatever you love doing; you are happy to spend your time doing it, which means you can eventually become a master at it. When you are a master of something, you can then monetize it in many ways - for example, teaching others how to become a master themselves.

Everyone has different desires. Some people like working with animals, some people like working with computers, some like caring for people and other folks like writing books.

Whatever it is, a general rule of thumb is to do what makes you happy and chase the vision, not the money. The money will end up following you.

2. Don’t find a Job — Start a Business

A hot topic of late is the idea to; Stop Trading Your Time For Money.

If you trade your time for money, you only have 24 hours in each day to sell. Whereas, if you have a product on the market like an Education Course for example; you can create it once, sell 100’s of units per day and still have all your time to do other things.

As Naval, the creative thinker and Angel Investor from Silicon Valley said in this tweet storm about How to Get Rich (without getting lucky);

‘’You’re not going to get rich renting out your time. You must own equity — a piece of a business — to gain your financial freedom.’’

Some people have limited beliefs that starting a business means having no life. But this doesn’t have to be the case. For many; startups means play 🐬

Seeing a business move from a concept on a rough piece of paper to your first sale is a uniquely rewarding experience and one of few that ticks each one of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

While there is nothing wrong with getting a job, everyone needs to do it at some point in their life, it’s worth keeping in mind this old saying;

If you don’t build your dreams, someone will hire you to help build theirs.

3. Go with the flow — Operate in a growing Industry

Markets move like water, they are fluid and always changing. Positioning yourself in a declining market is equivalent to swimming upstream against the current. An example of this would be starting a CD sales business just after MP3 and Internet music streaming came about.

The art is to swim with the current and go with the flow — this is how you get power of the whole river behind you.

One industry that has grown exponentially in the last decade is Bitcoin and the blockchain economy. Starting from humble beginnings, the combined marketcap of all cryptocurrencies today sits at approximately $250 billion in size. There are thousands of businesses and millions of people already operating in this space and it’s still in it’s very early days.

Opportunity is plentiful. You don’t have to be technical or a software developer to get involved, you can contribute by sharing feedback, writing content or sharing social media posts. Open public blockchains are borderless and neutral by design so everyone is invited to participate. If you are new to the cryptocosm, educating yourself first is the best protocol. Having a sound macro perspective is especially important due to recent events. Following the smart money / smart people is always a decent strategy.

4. Find your purpose, work on what’s needed most

We live in a colourful world and a flamboyant universe. There are so much good things happening all around us, and yet, there are a lot of problems that still need to be solved.

1.5 billion people don’t have access to basic finance (albeit cryptocurrency is starting to finally changing this). Millions of people don’t have access to electricity or clean water. Freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of assembly, the right to privacy — they are all under attack.

What’s needed most is: Creative ideas, collective effort and radical action

When you put others first and take a principles-first approach to what you do, the universe conspires to assist you and manifest your goals.

When you fight for something truly worth fighting for, you come alive and feel a wave of positive energy tingling from your head to your toes.

We make a living by what we earn, but we make a life by what we give.
